3M

3M, whose brands include Scotch, Post-it, Scotchgard, Thinsulate, and Scotch-Brite, is a worldwide leader in products for consumers, business and industry.

Before turning to Teradata, 3M's business units operated independently, leading to poor sales visibility and profitability by market and customer. Data redundancies and data gaps led to various problems, and legacy systems couldn't react quickly to business changes.

3M built its global Enterprise Data Warehouse to support 10,000 users from all 3M business units, subsidiaries, channel partners and customers. The Enterprise Data Warehouse integrates data from hundreds of systems worldwide, allowing users to view data by product, customer, geography, organizational and time dimensions. 3M also uses Teradata Education Network to provide IT professionals with online, one-stop shopping to register for classes, participate in web-based training and order CD-ROM training guides.

[2Q 2004] Efficiency is a top goal in the frenzy of our daily lives. We often want to complete multiple tasks with one action-the proverbial killing of two birds with one stone-like stopping by the dry cleaner on your way to the market. In our quest for efficiency, consumer electronics manufacturers now boast wireless telephones with built-in digital cameras and PDAs with integrated cellular/walkie-talkie/speaker phones, and the home office now enjoys the benefits of a printer that also serves as a copier, fax and scanner in one unit.

[2Q 2004] For Peter Matteoni, IT training and managing a data warehouse go together. The IT senior project lead specialist for 3M Corp.'s Teradata-based Global Enterprise Data Warehouse believes that staying on top of technology development and deepening the skill level of his extract, transform and load (ETL) staff are essential. "If data is king, then training within the data warehouse environment is the key that will unleash the power to bring a competitive advantage in a global market," he says.

[2Q 2003] AT A FORD MOTOR COMPANY ASSEMBLY plant in Los Angeles, a truck containing thousands of valuable parts waits to be unloaded, while another truck that just arrived is immediately unloaded. Why? Ford prioritizes its parts and readjusts the priorities daily, depending on a specific part's importance to the current manufacturing process. As it happens, the second truck contains parts that are critical to the assembly line and must be unloaded first.
Current Practices in Active Data Warehousing
Dr. Richard Hackathorn conducted a series of interviews regarding seven companies who have pioneered implementations of active data warehousing: 3M Corporation, Delta Technology, Ford Motor, Midwest Card Services, PING Inc., Strategy.com, and Union Pacific. This white paper summarizes these interviews, and then synthesizes the common themes and lessons learned.
